What is the IJzermonding nature reserve?

The IJzermonding is a 130-hectare nature reserve and natural area located where the IJzer River meets the North Sea. Fresh and salt water mix here to form brackish water, creating a unique landscape of mudflats and salt marshes. These mudflats are home to thousands of small organisms such as worms, snails, and crustaceans, providing a rich feeding ground for the countless birds in the area. It's a true paradise for bird species like the curlew, the dunlin, and the oystercatcher — and if you're lucky, you might even spot a seal in the estuary.

How to get to the IJzermonding from Nieuwpoort

What makes the IJzermonding so appealing from Nieuwpoort? The location! The reserve sits just a stone's throw from the town center, less than 4 kilometers away. On weekends, public holidays, and during school vacations, a ferry even runs between the town center and the nature reserve. Prefer to go on foot or by bike? That's easy too, via the car-free walking and cycling path between Nieuwpoort-Bad and Nieuwpoort-Stad.

Hiking trails in the IJzermonding

There isn't just one, but several routes for exploring the IJzermonding on foot:

1. Short, accessible route (approx. 7 km)

Starting from the De Vierboete parking area on Halvemaanstraat, this roughly 7 km route takes you into the IJzermonding. Along the way, you'll pass bird-watching hides and the De Zeehond observation hut, which includes a nature-education pond and an amphitheater. Most of the paths are wheelchair- and stroller-accessible.

2. IJzermonding hike (13 km)

Start at the free parking area at the end of Halvemaanstraat and follow the low-set trail markers through the unpaved part of the reserve, past the De Zeehond observation hut. In winter, about an hour before high tide is the best time to actually spot a seal.

3. Full-day hike (18 km)

For those who want to make a full day of it: this route combines the IJzermonding with historic buildings in Nieuwpoort-Stad and a ferry crossing.

Wear sturdy shoes for the longer routes, and be sure to bring binoculars — after all, you should never get too close to a seal.
