Simli Dunes: A Remarkable Coastal Landscape

The Simli Dunes may be relatively young, but they boast rich, varied terrain that is both scenic and ecologically valuable. Covering nearly 30 hectares, this dune area is part of an ancient dune cordon that once stretched from La Panne to Nieuwpoort. Climb to the central panoramic platform for breathtaking views of this Natura 2000-listed protected area.

Ponies: Natural Allies for Biodiversity

To preserve the delicate balance of dune grasslands and prevent the spread of invasive plant species, a herd of ponies roams freely across the dunes. These natural grazers play a key role in ecological management, helping to maintain open habitats that are essential for biodiversity.

A Cross-Border Nature Reserve

The Simli Dunes are part of the cross-border nature reserve "West Coast – Dunes of Flanders", stretching from Dunkirk (France) to Westende (Belgium). This protected area is recognized at the European level for its ecological significance and is included in the Natura 2000 network of conservation sites.
