Discover the Simliduinen

Dune Hotel is located beside a beautiful nature reserve: the Simli Dunes (Simliduinen). The Simli Dunes in Nieuwpoort are not very old, yet they boast a variety of striking hills. The area covers around 30 hectares and was once part of a long line of dunes stretching from De Panne to Nieuwpoort. In the heart of the dunes stands a viewing platform, offering a magnificent panorama across the entire nature reserve.

Ponies helping nature

A herd of ponies grazes here, helping to keep the landscape open and preventing dominant plants from taking over. This allows rare grasses and the wet valleys within the dunes to flourish. The ponies play a vital role in maintaining the balance of nature and ensuring the area remains rich in a diversity of plants and wildlife.

A cross-border nature reserve

The Simli Dunes form part of a larger protected area: West Coast – Dunes of Flanders. This stretches from Dunkirk in France to Westende in Belgium. It is recognised across Europe as a valuable natural habitat and is part of the Natura 2000 network.
