With average daytime highs of around 15°C in October, autumn is still ideal for long walks along the beach, through the dunes or beside the harbour channel. And if the weather turns? That is all part of the charm of an autumn break by the sea: combine fresh coastal air with local discoveries, shopping and cosy moments indoors.
October, Grey Shrimp Month in Nieuwpoort
Food lovers have an extra reason to visit in October. Throughout the month, Nieuwpoort celebrates one of the North Sea’s most iconic delicacies: the grey shrimp.
Restaurants, fishing traditions and culinary events put this Belgian coastal speciality in the spotlight. It is the perfect opportunity to discover another, more delicious side of Nieuwpoort.
On selected dates, the tourist office also organises activities exploring the grey shrimp and Nieuwpoort’s maritime heritage.
Walk by the sea… and forget the time
In autumn, Nieuwpoort’s beach becomes wonderfully spacious and peaceful again. Simply follow the shoreline or enjoy a walk along the harbour channel between Nieuwpoort-Bad and Nieuwpoort-Stad.
For a taste of the wilder coast, explore the IJzermonding nature reserve, where the River Yser meets the North Sea. Mudflats, salt marshes and birdlife create a remarkable landscape — and you may even spot seals.
Guided walks through the nature reserve are scheduled for 21 and 28 October 2026.
